  • In 1992, India made fortification of salt with iodine mandatory, for direct human consumption. In 2011, the Supreme Court also mandated universal iodization for the control of iodine deficiencies. • Similar to ISRO’s plan to carry persons on a
space mission, NIOT has undertaken
Samudrayaan. The ¹ 200 croreproject
proposes to carry three persons in a
submersible vehicle to a depth of 6000
metres under sea for various studies.
• The success of the ‘’Samudrayaan’’ will help
India join the league of developed nations
in exploration of minerals from oceans.
• India has been allocated a site of 75,000 sq
km in the Central Indian Ocean Basin by
the International Sea Bed Authority for
exploration of polymetallic nodules from
seabed.

59. Correct Option: (a)
Explanation:
• Statement 2 is incorrect: El Niño: A
warming of the ocean surface, or aboveaverage sea surface temperatures (SST), in
the central and eastern tropical Pacific
Ocean. Over Indonesia, rainfall tends to
become reduced while rainfall increases over
the tropical Pacific Ocean. The low-level
surface winds, which normally blow from
east to west along the equator (“easterly
winds”), instead weaken or, in some cases,
start blowing the other direction (from west
to east or “westerly winds”).
Supplementary Notes:
• There has been no El Niño event in the
central and equatorial Pacific Ocean and yet
the world will be subjected to recordbreaking land and sea temperatures and
extreme weather events for three more
months, according to the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO).
• These points towards a clear link to humaninduced climate change being the reason
for greater heat in the atmosphere.
• “July 2019 was the hottest month on record
with heat waves and other extreme weather
events, even without a strong El Niño
event,” said Maxx Dilley, director of WMO
Climate Adaptation and Prediction Branch.
This was a clear sign of global warming
rather than any natural force, he added.
• The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is
a natural phenomenon that comprises a
warm and a cold phase known as El Niño
and La Niña respectively. When both these
conditions do not exist the period is termed
as ENSO neutral.

with the highest malnutrition burden by
improving utilization of key Anganwadi
Services and improving the quality of
Anganwadi Services delivery.
• Its aim to ensure holistic development and
adequate nutrition for pregnant women,
mothers and children.
• The Ministry of Women and Child
Development (MWCD) is implementing
POSHAN Abhiyaan in 315 Districts in first
year, 235 Districts in second year and
remaining districts will be covered in the
third year.
• There are a number of schemes directly/
indirectly affecting the nutritional status of
children (0-6 year’s age) and pregnant
women and lactating mothers. In spite of
these, level of malnutrition and related
problems in the country is high. There is no
dearth of schemes but lack of creating
synergy and linking the schemes with each
other to achieve common goal. POSHAN
Abhiyaan through robust convergence
mechanism and other components would
strive to create the synergy.
Feature:
The POSHAN Abhiyaan, as an apex body, will
monitor, supervise, fix targets and guide the
nutrition related interventions across the
Ministries.

Explanation:
• Statement 1, 2 & 3 are correct:
– Rapid molecular tests: This tests is
used to detect influenza viral RNA or
nucleic acids in respiratory specimens
with high sensitivity and high specificity.
Notably, the detection of influenza viral
RNA or nucleic acids by molecular assays
does not necessarily indicate detection
of viable virus or on-going influenza viral
replication.
– Sputum smear microscopy: This
technique requires the examination of
sputum samples using a microscope to
determine the presence of bacteria. In
the current case definitions
recommended by WHO, one positive
result is required for a diagnosis of
smear-positive pulmonary TB.
– Culture-based methods: A culture test
involves studying bacteria by growing
the bacteria on different substances. This
is to find out if particular bacteria are
present. In the case of the TB culture test
the test is to see if the TB bacteria
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, are present.
• Statement 4 is incorrect: MDR-TB is
resistant to anti-TB drugs like isoniazid and
rifampicin
Supplementary Notes
• Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease
usually caused by Mycobacterium
tuberculosis (MTB) Bacteria. Tuberculosis

such as the draft National Health Policy
2015, World Health Organization’s (WHO)
End TB Strategy and the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) of the United
Nations (UN) for TB elimination by 2025.
• The Health Ministry has signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
Wadhwani Institute for Artificial
Intelligence (AI) to explore the application
of Artificial Intelligence technology in its
fight against tuberculosis (TB) in 2019.
• Revised National TB Programme
(RNTCP) aims at adoption of AI
technologies for building easy TB combats.
RNTCP is the state-run tuberculosis (TB)
control initiative of the Government of
India.
• As per the National Strategic Plan 2012–
17, the program has a vision of achieving a
“TB free India”, and aims to achieve
Universal Access to TB control services.
• As part of the collaboration, Wadhwani AI
would support the National TB programme
by helping it become AI-ready which
includes developing, piloting, and deploying
AI-based solutions. It would support the
programme in vulnerability and hot-spot
mapping, modeling novel methods of
screening and diagnostics.
• India plans to end TB by 2025, five years
ahead of the Global Sustainable
Development targets. Meanwhile, World
Health Organization (WHO) stated that
countries aiming to reduce their TB burden
by 2035.

64. Correct Option: (b)

Cauvery, Muddenahalli. Their addition has
increased the area of Nagarahole National
Park to 847 square kilometres, from 647.
• There addition will bring down humanwildlife conflict in the area as wild animals
would get more room to move from one
place to another. Also, more grants can now
be obtained to prevent such conflict.
About Nagarhole National Park:
• Nagarahole is named after Nagarahole
(Cobra river in the local language, Kannada),
a winding river which runs eastwards

with Bandipur National Park (875 sq. kms)
and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary (325 sq.
kms) to its South East and Wayanad (350
sq. kms) to the South-West, is one of the
last remaining and best protected habitats
for endangered species like the Elephant and

more than 1.3 billion people, and reduce the
impacts of drought on vulnerable
populations to build.
• The UNCCD secretariat facilitates
cooperation between developed and
developing countries, particularly around
knowledge and technology transfer for
sustainable land management.

(CBD) and the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) with an integrated
approach and the best possible use of
natural resources.

74.D.
Afghanistan
Explanation :

U.S. envoy announced a draft troop pullout deal with Taliban. Under a draft peace deal with the Taliban the United States will withdraw 5,400 troops from Afghanistan and close five bases within 135 days. Top U.S. negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad showed a draft deal to the Afghan president after declaring that they are “at the threshold of an agreement” following the end of the ninth round of U.S.- Taliban talks in Qatar. The agreement still needs President Donald Trump’s approval. The Taliban, at their strongest since their 2001 defeat by a U.S.-led invasion, want all U.S. and NATO troops out of Afghanistan immediately, while the U.S. seeks a withdrawal in phases that would depend on the Taliban meeting certain conditions such as a reduction in violence.
